Preparing good meals for our four-legged friends can be fun. We mustn’t forget some general rules in determining which foods to choose, which can vary widely, depending upon the age, race, sex, health and the amount of physical activity of the animal.
We can find a wide choice on the market of ready to eat cat and dog food which satisfy every nutritional need. However, this type of food may not be satisfactory to the eye of a “gourmet” pet owner and what’s more, in a house where the owners love to cook, there are usually leftovers that may be the base of some “special” dishes for our little pets.
I must point out that our four legged friends are NOT human puppies, and I must also remind you that a cat is NOT a small dog. In fact, cats, being felines, are carnivorous while dogs, being omnivorous, need large quantities of animal protein.
A balanced diet calls for the exact amount of nutrients need by the single animal. Therefore, I shall limit myself to give a few useful suggestions to he who wishes to undertake the preparation of homemade pet food.
