Etiquette, as well as tactile pleasure, calls for a table pad to be
placed under the tablecloth.
Known as a table pad, that thick white flannel under lining which, when
covered with the tablecloth, on one hand protects the table, whether
antique or not, from unexpected wine spills or, worse yet, overturned
pea soup, greasy gravies or fertile fish sauces, while at the same time
it softens the surface of the table, and is still solid enough for glasses
to be set on it.
Everyone should have at least one table pad, possibly with fitted elastic
edges to keep it taut and smooth, which allows hot serving dishes to
be set down without leaving ugly rings on the precious antique table.
